The best time to be on the water in Lefkada, and the worst

By Captain Bill

best time to rent a boat Lefkada

The Ionian sea has its own daily rhythm. The wind is light at dawn, builds through the afternoon, and drops again near sunset. The water colour is brightest at midday under direct sun, warmest under low light at the start and end of the day. Most boat days are run between these poles, and the timing decides what kind of day you have.

Within the day

Dawn to 09:00. The sea is flattest, the air is coolest, and the light is soft. Best for crossing open water, so the Lefkada to Paxos boat day is usually scheduled to start at this end of the morning. The downside: it is too early for most guests on holiday, and most tavernas don't open until 12:00.

09:00 to 12:00. Our standard departure. Sea still flat in most conditions, sun bright but not hot. First swim stops fall in this window. The water reads its deepest blue.

12:00 to 15:00. The water colour peaks. The seabed visibility under direct sun is the brightest you will see, pale turquoise over sand, deeper teal over rock, the patterns of the seabed legible from the boat. The wind starts to build in this window in most summer months. By 14:00 expect 2-3 Beaufort on the inner Ionian, more on the west coast.

15:00 to 17:00. Anchorages start to become uncomfortable on the west coast. The boat rolls more. Time to head for the protected east coast or back to base.

17:00 to sunset. If you are still on the water, this is the warm-light window. Soft amber on the cliffs, the village windows starting to glow. Long shadows on the sand. Photographers' window.

Across the season

Lefkada's boat season runs May to October. Each month has a profile.

May. Cool mornings, cool sea (around 19°C). Sun is bright but the swim is for the brave. Tavernas are quietly open. No crowds anywhere. Best for guests who want the island without other people.

June. Sea warming to 22°C. Days are long. Light steady through evening. The inner Ionian is usually flat. Paxos days are still calm. June is most visitors' favourite month before the summer crowds.

July. Peak warmth, peak demand. Sea around 25°C. Beaches busy. Wind generally moderate but the maistros can blow hard for a week mid-month and shut the west coast down. Book ahead.

August. Sea around 26°C. Highest demand of the year. Greek holiday month, so beach tavernas and ports busiest. The two weeks around 15 August (the Dormition holiday) are the absolute peak.

September. The locals' favourite month. Sea still 25°C. Light starts to soften. Crowds drop sharply after the first week. The best month for a Paxos day.

October. Cooling. Tavernas start to close in the second half. Sea around 23°C. Still warm enough to swim, calm enough most days for the inner loop. Last good window before we wrap the season.

Wind direction matters more than wind strength

A 4-Beaufort north-westerly is uncomfortable on the west coast and almost nothing in the inner Ionian. The skipper plans the day around the direction, not the number. The most reliable forecast for the area is the Hellenic National Meteorological Service marine bulletin: hnms.gr.

A real day

For the practical detail of what to bring on the day itself, see our guide on what to bring on a boat in Lefkada.

A retired couple from Yorkshire booked us mid-September. They asked when the best day to go was. We said "Wednesday, the wind drops for 48 hours after Tuesday". They went Wednesday. Glass-flat sea, eight hours, Paxos and Antipaxos, sunburn. They sent a photograph of the chart plotter showing 32 knots over a totally flat sea. That was their favourite day of the holiday.

FAQ

What is the best month for a boat day in Lefkada? June for warmth without crowds, September for warmth with quiet. Both are calmer than mid-July or August.

What time should I start? 09:00 is our standard. Earlier if you want Paxos. Later than 11:00 means you lose the calm morning sea for the crossing.

Is the sea warm enough to swim in May? At 19°C the sea is cool but swimmable. Most guests take it well after the first plunge.

Are the beaches crowded in August? Porto Katsiki and Voutoumi (Antipaxos) are busy. Mylos, the inner Ionian beaches, and the smaller coves stay quiet even in peak August.
