Boat with skipper or self-drive in Lefkada, which is the better day?

By Captain Bill

boat with skipper Lefkada

The honest answer: a boat with a skipper and a self-drive rental in Lefkada cost roughly the same once you add the skipper fee and the deposit-and-fuel of self-drive. The difference is not price. It is what kind of day you want.

What a skipper actually does for you

A skipper does three useful things on a day on the Ionian. First, they read the wind, which means they choose the right route in the morning and adjust mid-day if the forecast lies. Second, they know the bays, which side of Meganisi is calm in a southerly, which cove on Kastos has the cleanest water, where the seabed is sand and where it is rock so the anchor holds. Third, they let you stop reading charts and start drinking your coffee.

That is the case for hiring one. Whether it is worth it depends on what you want from the day.

Self-drive, when it's the right call

Self-drive is the better day if any of these are true:

  • You have a valid powerboat license and you like driving boats. This is the obvious case.
  • Your group is two to four people who want to set the pace themselves. No fixed lunch stop, just stop where you feel like it.
  • You have rented boats elsewhere before and you have a route in mind that you want to follow.
  • You want the satisfaction of standing at the wheel.

The Highfield 650 Sport is the self-drive boat in our fleet. 150 HP, ten-person capacity, well-balanced enough for first-time owners. Self-drive requires a license that complies with the Greek boat license rules, a credit card pre-authorisation, and a deposit on booking.

With-skipper, when it's the right call

A skipper is the better day if any of these are true:

  • You don't have a license, or you have one but you'd rather not spend the day reading charts.
  • You have first-time boaters in the group, older parents, small kids, friends who get nervous on water.
  • You want a specific destination (Paxos, Porto Katsiki) and you want the route adapted to the day's wind.
  • You want to drink with lunch.

The Mazziena 26SP rental comes with a skipper by default. Faster, bigger, with all the electronics. Twin 200 HP Honda. A licensed skipper from our crew at the wheel.

The cost honestly

The retail prices vary by date and demand, but the rough shape is this:

  • A full self-drive day on the Highfield: rental fee + a deposit + you pay for fuel at the end.
  • A full skipper day on the Mazziena: a higher day rate that includes the skipper, no deposit, fuel paid at the end.

By the end of a long August day, the totals are close. The Mazziena costs more per hour but you get the bigger boat and a captain. The Highfield is more economical if you have a license and a small group.

A real example

Two couples in their forties arrived last June from Manchester. The husbands both had licenses; the wives had never been on a small boat. They booked the Highfield self-drive, did the inner Ionian loop, and by hour three the husbands wanted to be at lunch instead of at the wheel. The next year they booked the Mazziena with a skipper. Same group, same route, completely different day. The second one was better. They told us so.

FAQ

Do skippers know the route, or do I pick it? You pick. The skipper advises based on weather and tells you what's realistic for the day. Most groups choose between the three published routes, inner Ionian loop, Paxos, Porto Katsiki, and the skipper adapts the order.

Is the skipper included in the price for the Mazziena 26SP? Yes. The Mazziena always comes with a licensed skipper from our crew.

Can I switch from self-drive to skipper on the day? If a skipper is available. We don't always have one free on short notice in peak August. Book the skipper version if you suspect you'll want it.

Do I tip the skipper? There is no fixed expectation. Most guests tip 10-15% of the day rate if they enjoyed the day. Not required.

To book either, use the booking form and pick the skipper option that suits you.
